Report: Apple revealing two iPad 3 tablets in January

Apple will reportedly reveal two iPad 3 models during the Macworld/iWorld expo scheduled for January 26-28, 2012, in San Francisco. Sources claim that both will offer the same 9.7-inch QXGA screen (1536 x 2048), but one will feature a 5MP camera lens while the other will sport a larger 8MP lens. Both will provide dual LED light bars to strengthen the brightness of the screens. According to sources at Apple's supply chain partners, via Digitimes, the iPad 2 will also join the two newer models during the show.

Apple Patent Describes New Type of Face-Recognition Tech

Future iOS devices could be unlocked by your face, and not fooled by still photos. Image: Patently Apple. Swipe to unlock could be a thing of the past for next-gen iOS devices. Like current Galaxy Nexus users, iOS users could soon be using facial recognition technology to lock or unlock their iDevices.

As described in a recently discovered patent, Apple's method would sense when a user is approaching the device — for example, if it's seated in a dock, and the user walks toward it. The device would then use its image processor to execute facial recognition to unlock the device, all with low battery penalties.

Researcher finds vulnerability in WPS protocol, looks for manufacturers to offer fix

On the plus side, your router's mostly secure. Security researcher Stefan Viehbock has just discovered a major security hole which allowed him to use a brute force technique to access a WPS PIN-protected network in about two hours. According to Viehbock, a design flaw allows the WPS protocol's 8-digit PIN security to fall dramatically as additional attempts are made. With each attempt, the router will send a message stating whether the first four digits are correct while the last digit of the key is used as a checksum and then given out by the router in negotiation.

Google Sued Over Safe Shopping Feature

Google is being sued by Buysafe, a secure online transaction provider, which claims that Google maliciously extracted its business information and is now rolling out a technology based on that information. According to Buysafe, Google's Trusted Stores program is modeled after Buysafe and has been built using the information of a executive previously employed by a Buysafe partner, which held “extensive” discussions with Buysafe and obtained substantial business information as a result. Buysafe's claims are covered by a patent the company filed in 2003 and received in early 2010.

It wasn't long ago that HTC's bootloader unlock utility hit the masses, thereby righting the company's silly decision to lock its phones down in the first place. Now, continuing its commitment to mod-lovers and those who appreciate freedom, The House of Chou is announcing that its latest lineup of Android phones can find a similar (and proper) fate. The company has released an updated bootloader unlock tool that supports all Android devices released after September of this year. Naturally, this includes such handsets as the HTC EVO Design 4G, Rezound, Rhyme and Vivid.

It's not a flying fish, it's a submarine-launched UAV

VTOL may be old news already, but here's another great USP for any UAV: the ability to launch from a submerged submarine. The technology is still in development, but the Navy wants to try it from periscope depth during exercises in the Pacific Ocean next year. If all goes to plan, a Switchblade folding-wing drone will be ejected from the submarine's trash disposal unit and then carried to the surface by an SLV ('submerged launch vehicle'), which will keep it dry, point it into the wind and then hurl it heavenwards so it can go a-snooping.

Leaked roadmap says WP Tango coming in Q2 2012, Apollo in Q4

A leaked roadmap offers new info on the release schedule for Windows Phone updates, which doesnÂ't quite line up with the info we heard about a week ago. Plus, it's a leaked schedule, so take it with a pinch of salt. The roadmap has the Tango update arriving in Q2 of 2012. The earlier info had Tango launching at CES (which is in January 2012), but maybe it will be unveiled at CES and the official rollout will begin in the April-June time period.

The tile under Tango says "Product with best prices", which is in line with what we've heard of the codenamed update, namely that it will enable cheaper WP7 phones.

LG is set to blow some minds in a few weeks during CES 2012 with a lineup of new IPS monitors, one of which features a bezel somewhere around 1 to 2-mm thick: the DM92 series. Given that the big reveal is just around the corner, LG naturally didn't provide much in regards to details. However the DM92 series will measure 27-inches, support 3D content, and incorporate an IPS panel which “enables greater depth, consistent color and brightness at wider viewing angles compared with conventional 3D displays.”.

Ewen the Cheerlight robot reacts to tweets about colors

A robot creator has managed to create a special robot named Ewen, that reacts to tweets about colors. Whenever a tweet is sent to the @cheerlights account, the robot reads it, and depending on the color on the tweet - it gives a different facial expression. The robot is designed to look like a Jawa from Star Wars (though its creator calls Ewen an Ewok), but it functions as intended. Red makes him angry, yellow happy, blue sad, and purple confused. He doesn't react to other colors at the moment, but we're pretty sure it can be upgraded in the future.

Check out IBM's 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) hard disk and those gripes about dragging around that USB thumb drive soon evaporate. This 1956 HDD was composed of 50 24-inch discs, stacked together and taking up 16 sq ft of real estate. The once-cutting-edge monstrosity was capable of commanding an annual fee of $35,000 and stored up to 5MB of data. Sure, by modern standards it's a pretty modest capacity, but the RAMAC still weighed in at just shy of a ton.

Nokia N801T with Symbian Anna and NFC announced in China

Nokia has officially announced a new Symbian smartphone - the Nokia N801T, a handset that features TD-SCDMA connectivity and, thus, will be available only in China. The Nokia N801T runs Symbian Anna, and features a 4 inch display, mobile TV (there's even an external antenna), NFC, 3.5mm headset jack, Nokia Maps, and a stainless steel case. We can see a front-facing camera, and there's probably another camera of at least 5MP on the back.
The N801T could be released in China before the end of the year.

Myst 3D coming to the Nintendo 3DS in 2012

We're not sure how many of our readers out there might remember the game Myst, but I certainly do remembering running in on my AST computer that was clocked at a meager 133MHz back in the day. The good news for those who do remember the game is that you will be able to relive the game once more in literal 3D as Hoplite Research will be bringing the adventure game over onto the Nintendo 3DS in 2012. For those who are unfamiliar with the game, the game was originally released back in September of 1993, a good 18 years ago and is basically a first-person adventure game.

Age of Wulin MMORPG in-game item sells for $16,000 at auction

Free-to-play and some pay-to-play MMORPGs such as World of Warcraft usually come with a game store from which players can purchase "perks". These include items such as in-game mounts, pets, weapons, skill slots, etc. The prices may range from anywhere but they're usually in the "reasonable" range although upcoming MMO, Age of Wulin, may have just taken the cake. Apple suppliers reportedly preparing materials for “iTV” in Q1 2012

Rumors of an Apple television have started to gain more and more traction which seems to more or less confirm (albeit unofficially) that such a device is indeed in the works. According to Digitimes, their industry sources have informed them that Apple's suppliers have already started to prepare the materials necessary for an "iTV" in Q1 of 2012. This would be in preparation for a scheduled launch by Apple either in Q2 or Q3 of 2012.

Human Birdwings combines Wiimote, smartphone in DIY flying initiative (video)

Somewhere, somehow, the Wright Brothers are smiling. Jarnos Smeets, a mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, has been plugging away on his Human Birdwings project for many, many months now, and his latest breakthroughs are absolutely worthy of a peek. Put simply, the bloke has married an HTC Wildfire S, a Wii remote and bookoodles of software genius in order to create a set of wings that are controlled by a human waving his arms as if to fly. As these things tend to go, it's all better explained in video, two of which are hosted up after the break.
