Crucial outs v4 SSD for solid-state storage on a budget

Solid-state drives cost just a fraction of what they did a few years ago, but with prices that can still exceed $1,000, you could hardly label them as cheap. Crucial still aims to put solid-state storage within reach of those on a budget, however, releasing its 2.5-inch v4 drive with pricing that starts at $50. That entry-level model will net you just 32 gigs of storage - hardly a lust-worthy sum - but the series is also available in configurations of 64GB ($70), 128GB ($100) and 256GB ($190), offering read speeds of up to 230 MB/s and write speeds of up to 190 MB/s with SATA 2-capable desktops and laptops.

Apple iPhone 5 May Launch On 12th September, Release On 21st September!

Apparently, one latest entrant should be the successor to the iPhone 4S. The next generation iPhone is a highly anticipated gadget and its launch is easily one of the most awaited gadget launches of the year. Apple broke the protocol last year after releasing the iPhone 4S in early October instead of June, and while it might seem logical that Apple might continue on this new trail, reports suggest that Apple is prepping for the purported iPhone 5 launch which now falls on September 12th.
iPhone 5 release date has also been reported as 21st September,  a mere nine days after the curtain raising ceremony.

Sony backpedals on Android 4.1 upgrade statement, is now 'actively investigating' all Xperia updates

Let's chalk this one up to something being lost in corporate translation. After a UK company rep issued a statement just days ago confirming the lack of an Android 4.1 upgrade path for certain 2011 Xperia handsets, Sony's delicately backtracking and claiming that public info was made "in error." While this official retraction may soothe previously irate owners' concerns, it's still not an outright commitment to Jelly Bean, as the company's only now pledging to "actively [investigate]. upgrades for all devices" - a carefully worded PR promise par excellence.

RIM rumored to lay off 3,000 employees on August 13th

. Research in Motion (RIMM) in June reported the worst quarter in the company's history, and announced plans to reduce its global workforce by 5,000 people. According to Cantech Letter, the troubled smartphone manufacturer will let go of 3,000 workers on August 13th, mainly from its customer service, human resources, marketing, non-enterprise sales and Global Repair Services departments. Employees who are working on the upcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system and those in an enterprise sales position are reportedly “safe” from the layoffs, which the company hopes to complete before the end of its second quarter on August 31st.

Outlook.com preview: Microsoft reinvents its online email offerings

Maybe you heard, but Microsoft launched a new email service today. No, not Hotmail - a completely new, built-from-scratch service. This is Outlook.com, and for the time being, at least, it will exist separately from Hotmail. So why didn't Redmond just give Hotmail a drastic overhaul. Well, friends, there are two explanations. First, the polite one: for technical reasons, the engineers found it easier to build a new service from scratch rather than retrofit the old one. The frank answer: Microsoft is keenly aware Hotmail has a bad rap, thanks to those banners and flashy video ads.

Twitter quietly adds clickable stock symbols

It might not pack the same thrill as the rumors of in-feed video, but Twitter has added clickable stock symbols on tweets. This now throws up search results for both the stock and the company, using a new 'cash' tag, like $FB, to differentiate from typical links and tags. As noted by TNW, it's bad news for the founder of StockTwits, a service that offered similar functionality to gather tweet-based financial nuggets.

Sony Xperia Tablet leaked from internal slides: Surface-style keyboard and tentative $450 price tag

Sony's next-generation tablet appears to have leaked on internal slides spotted by German news site, Mobiflip. In short, it's thinner and lighter than the Tablet S, while internal specifications also trump it, including a Tegra 3 quad-core processor, Android 4.0 ("or later"), 3G connectivity and three storage options; 16, 32 and 64GB. The whole tablet follows the same folded magazine design of Sony's existing tablet, is splashproof and houses a 6,000mAh battery that the slides suggest will manage 10 hours of WiFi-based web browsing.

Microsoft intros Wedge Mobile Keyboard, whose case doubles as a stand

As we've seen, there will be no shortage of tablet / laptop hybrids on offer when Windows 8 starts shipping this fall. But since those keyboard docks will typically be sold separately, that means you're also about to see loads of third-party alternatives. Not to be left out, Microsoft just announced a Bluetooth mobile keyboard along with its smallest-ever mouse – both of which can be used with any Windows tablet. Starting with that Wedge Mobile Keyboard, it resembles Zaggmate's iPad case from 2010, in that it has a hard case to make it more travel-resilient.

Researchers prove your grandmother right, modern music is louder and all the same

Are your elders always complaining about loud and monotonous music. Or perhaps you've started to feel similar sentiments. The Artificial Intelligence Research Institute in Barcelona says it's not just a matter of opinion. The team analyzed data on loudness, pitch and timbre from just under half a million tracks spanning 55 years, finding the average volume of recordings has increased in that time — said to be the doing of record labels so songs stand out amongst other radio noise.

Here is yet another smartphone to have arrived on the FCC's doorsteps – the Huawei Ascend G 302D. Ah well, I guess it is not too big of an issue to grapple with after all, as there are far more baffling things on earth to figure out. Toshiba's most recent fiscal results (the first of its 2012 financial year) show that while the company pulled in $16 billion in turnover, it slumped to a $154 million loss for the last three months. While its "social infrastructure" unit (power plants, LED light bulbs and radiation detectors) generated a $107 million profit, the consumer electronics and white-goods sectors continued to lose sales. The company attributes the loss to further restructuring costs as well as pointing an accusatory digit toward the European financial crisis and concerns about power generation capacity in Japan.

So far in the rollout for the 2014 Kia Forte we've had two helpings of sketches, now we get an artfully obfuscated look at the car's actual sheetmetal. Posting photos of the five-door hatch on its South Korean Facebook page (our Forte is the K3 in Kia's home market), what we can say so far is that it's got an attractive backside. This is the budget maker's challenger to that thick slice of the market that's home to the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus, and speaking of that last car, when we look at the image above we get definite hints of it, and that's not a bad thing.

Sigma R&D has won first prize in a gesture challenge to show just how much more talent — like sign language translation and light saber fun — can be unlocked in a Kinect. Normally the Microsoft device can only scope body and full mitt movements, but the research company was able to track individual fingers with a Kinect or similar sensor, plus its custom software, allowing a user's hand to become a more finely tuned controller. To prove it, the company introduced a virtual lightsaber to a subject, tracking his swordsmanship perfectly and using his thumb extension to turn it on and off.

At the time, the company projected its Q2 2012 performance would see an operating loss of $40 million to $260 million versus Q2 2011, as well as a slight down tick in revenue at $11.9 billion to $13.3 billion quarter to quarter. This incident was not unlike the incident we reported on last year, in which a woman was recording video while driving when the truck in front of her kicked up a 2x4 off the road.

It's only a short logical leap from that to Twitter providing the content itself, and that's exactly what AdWeek claims may well happen. Its unconfirmed tipsters have the microblog taking a page from YouTube by pitching Hollywood movie and TV studios on "several" original shows that would live in followers' feeds, including the seemingly inescapable reality show. While Twitter wouldn't have someone in the director's chair, it might still play a role by letting viewers affect the show as it's happening - and of course, running ads.
