Apple wins injunction on U.S. Galaxy Nexus sales

. Apple has been granted a preliminary injunction banning sales of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone in the United States. U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh made her determination on Friday evening, just two days after granting a similar injunction banning sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. The judgement prevents Samsung from selling its Galaxy Nexus Android phone or any other device that is "no more than colorably different" in the U.S., All Things D reported.

Brain scanner assists paralyzed person to spell words

Brain scanner assists paralyzed person to spell words

Some paralyzed folk feel as though they are trapped in a “prison”, having failed to use their motor functions before their paralysis, and this can be quite a challenging and disheartening place to be in. However, there is hope in the form of a new brain scanner which was specially developed in order to help those who are completely paralyzed, by allowing them to “speak” using just the power of their thoughts. This is made possible thanks to the implementation of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) that will enable patients to select between 27 characters – the alphabet and of course, a blank space.

Microsoft lists 180 countries in Windows Phone 8 Marketplace, says apps can filter by screen size

Now that the dust has settled on the big Windows Phone 8 hoedown, Redmond is filling in the details of all its announcements. To wit, it just released a list of the 180 countries that will get access to its WP marketplace and developer app hub. That number is a big jump from the 63 markets and 38 app hubs of today, and with in-app purchasing coming soon, Microsoft emphasized that point - along with the 100,000 apps in stock - to developers. The software giant also added that the marketplace will filter apps by phone screen resolution and "other key characteristics," allowing easier targeting of users.

Kaspersky Lab issues call to the industry to ensure security for virtualization is top of the business agendaAbingdon, 29 June 2012 - UK businesses are displaying a worrying lack of understanding when it comes to securing their virtual environments, according to a study by internet security specialists Kaspersky Lab. The study, conducted globally among businesses with 100 or more IT workstations, found that a shocking one third of companies surveyed admitted that they only invest in security for physical environments, leaving their virtual platforms dangerously vulnerable to attack[1].

RIM reports Q1 fiscal results, job cuts and product delays lay ahead

RIM announced its Q1 results for the fiscal 2013 today. The Canadian maker of everything BlackBerry reported a net loss of $518 million on $2.8 billion of revenue. The latter is down 33%, compared to the previous quarter, while the net loss is significantly larger than the analysts' estimates. The company has shipped 7.8 million BlackBerry smartphones (down from more than 11 million in the previous quarter) and 260,000 PlayBooks.
The bad news continues with the announced delay of the BlackBerry 10 devices until Q1 of the calendar 2013. Apparently the integration of some key OS features into the new devices has been going worse than planned.

Ideum unveils speedy Platform and Pro multi-touch tables, says PixelSense ain't got nothin' (video)

Who knew giant multi-touch tables would trigger the next big speed race. Ideum clearly thinks that the PixelSense-based Samsung SUR40 is lagging with that AMD Athlon II X2, because it just rolled out a pair of speed demon 55-inch, 40-point touch surfaces (but not Surfaces) in the Platform and Pro. The Platform has a respectable dual 2.2GHz Core i7 and 8GB of RAM, but it also carries a pair of 256GB solid-state drives in case that museum exhibit app won't load quickly enough. Hopping to the Pro switches to two not quite as speedy 500GB hard drives in standard trim.

Pentagon starts Phoenix trial to harvest defunct satellites, MacGyver new ones from orbit

The Phoenix Frankenprogram to harvest the corpses of expired satellites and cobble together new ones seemed like one of DARPA's more daft ideas, but this one has actually kicked off its first phase of development. The plan is to first launch a service craft - replete with robotic arms and enough processing horsepower to work independently if needed - followed by the tiny base-unit skeleton satlets. The service mothership would dip into an orbital area called the "graveyard", grabbing pre-chosen cadavers and picking off usable parts, especially valuable antenna arrays, with its robo-limbs.

Does RIM shocker imply wider handset market deterioration?

Does RIM shocker imply wider handset market deterioration?

. RIM was expected to deliver a nightmarish, -30% year-on-year revenue decline into the May quarter - the company issued its latest profit warning just four weeks ago. Yet it ended up missing the lowered consensus estimate by 10%, generating just $2.8 billion in sales. The reasons for RIM's decline are well-known and will be rehashed again over the next 24 hours. But the size of the F1Q13 sales miss raises another question: apart from Apple and Samsung, is the handset industry drifting into serious trouble?

Last week, HTC shocked many by announcing it is pulling out from Brazil, by far the most important market in Latin America.

Taking a page from the “PC development” book, Qualcomm was demonstrating its latest Open GL driver which can turn 2D games into 3D without intervention from the developers. This demo is running with an Adreno 225 GPU, which can now be commonly found in high-end smartphones like select HTC One handsets or Samsung Galaxy SIII handsets in the USA. In this demo, the Adreno 225 powers a 1080p glasses-less 3D tablet display from master image, which looks much better than their 720p equivalent. Gottlieb Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach and Carl Benz are among those who have granted their names to the house of The Three-Pointed Star. The name the world knows best, Mercedes, is also an eponym but its owner has lived in a more obscure corner of lore. The personal effects of Hans-Peter Schlosser include photos of his mother, one Mercedes Adrienne Ramona Manuela Jellinek, the woman whose name continues to launch a thousand 'ships' about every seven hours. Schlosser was Mercedes' son, and his keepsakes have wound their way to the Mercedes-Benz archives, which had been missing an informative record of the woman herself.

Google just officially unveiled its next iteration for Android — Jelly Bean 4.1 — and now we're getting to see the various “buttery” improvements the company's worked into the OS. Hugo Barra, Director of Product Management, took to the I/O 2012 stage to detail the refinements introduced to its search integration. The entire experience has been redesigned from the ground-up with a fresher UI and a “faster, more natural” voice search ability. That refreshed interface borrows from the recently outed Knowledge Graph, displaying queries for weather, Wikipedia and restaurants in graphical card format.

While there isn't much of a solution right this second outside of buying the fixed-lens X10, the Japanese camera designer can say when we'll see an interchangeable XF-mount zoom lens: fall 2012. Assassin's Creed: Utopia has no links with Assassin's Creed III except storyline

The Assassin's Creed: Utopia smartphone game won't link to or affect Assassin's Creed III in any way, except as a continuation of the game's narrative. Several publishers have chosen to link their major releases with smartphone games as a free form of advertising. Ubisoft feels that a narrative link will be enough to ensure sales.
"There are no links between the games," Assassin's Creed producer Andreane Meunier told Eurogamer. "But the narrative will lead into the AC3 narrative, since it's a kind of pre-era to the Assassin's Creed 3 era."

On that day, the 16GB version of Samsung Galaxy S III will be launched via Sprint Stores, Web Sales, Business Sales, and Telesales, for $199.99 on contract. How much it's changed from the prototypes isn't yet known, but Google has said that it's been steadily working on refining the hardware along with the software. Sadly, the first crack at the wearable technology isn't coming to the broader masses just yet. Orders are only available to Google I/O attendees, and they cost a pretty hefty $1,500 for their release sometime next year.

Well if you're familiar with BiteSMS, you're in luck as the tweak has been updated and now includes a Quick Reply function for WhatsApp users. Samsung Galaxy S III to be launched by Verizon on July 12?

At this very moment, Verizon says its Samsung Galaxy S III will "ship by July 11", obviously without providing an exact launch date for the handset. But if HHGregg is correct, Verizon's S III will be out on July 12. That's going to be a Thursday, and it's well known that Verizon launches devices on Thursdays quite often.
It looks like HHGregg will sell only the 16GB version of the new Galaxy (for $199.99 on contract). Of course, Verizon will also have the 32GB version, asking $249.99 for it.

Those who've already pre-ordered the S III at Verizon will probably get it a few days earlier than July 12.

We're anxious about just what that combination could do to battery life and the price, neither of which were mentioned up front.

Seagate and DensBits team up on solid-state drives for the home, call truce in the HDD versus SSD war

Seagate and DensBits team up on solid-state drives for the home, call truce in the HDD versus SSD war

It's an understatement to say that Seagate started off on the wrong foot in its attitude towards solid-state drives: the company only slowly came around to embracing flash memory, and then mostly for the enterprise crowd and hybrid drive lovers. A newly-struck partnership between Seagate controller maker DensBits is signalling a more serious attempt to offer SSDs to everyday users. Along with catering to the business folk, Seagate wants its new teammate's help on building "low-cost, high-performance" consumer SSDs.

Acer Exec Looks Down on Microsoft Surface

Acer Exec Looks Down on Microsoft Surface

Not everyone has kind words about Microsoft's recently-unveiled Surface tablet. Oliver Ahrens, regional head of Acer in Europe, Middle East, and Africa, has dismissed the Surface as a competitive threat. Ahrens added that the 10.6-inch tablet with ARM and Intel platforms still has a lot of work to do in “improving the user touch experience on Windows 8.”.
“From a competitive point of view we are not concerned, not a bit,” said Ahrens.

Meanwhile, Acer is launching its portfolio of hardware that also runs on Windows 8, ranging from tablets to ultrabooks to clamshell notebooks.

Google Nexus 7 tablet specs revealed in alleged leaked training document

Google I/O is almost upon us and with the event coming up soon, this could also mean that the rumored Google Nexus tablet will finally be making an appearance, putting an end to the speculations and rumors once and for all. As usual with an impending launch, last minute rumors and "leaks" are commonplace, and thanks to Gizmodo Australia, they received a training document which outs the specs of the upcoming tablet. Of course given that none of this is official and documents can be easily faked, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now, at least until Google I/O which will be taking place on the 27th of June.
