Watch as a DIY 8-bit computer comes together, learn something in the process

Watch as a DIY 8-bit computer comes together, learn something in the process

We've actually already seen one completely home-built 8-bit computer but, while Jake Eisenmann wasn't afraid to show off his creation, Kyle Hovey is actually inviting us along for the ride. The project started up last week when Hovey gathered his first batch of parts and a pair of books and started designing a simple 8-bit computer based on the SAP-1 architecture (SAP stands for Simple as Possible). The transistor-transistor logic (TTL) design is slowly coming together and every step of the process is being documented by Hovey on his blog so that others may follow along and learn from his experience (and, most likely, his mistakes as well).

Etch Light Web Lamp

Etch Light Web Lamp

Lamps basically provide light to make a room brighter. But they can also help transform the mood in the room with the use of light. One example is this Etch Light Web Lamp which plays with shadows to create an interesting web of shapes in any room. The Etch Light Web lamp is a unique lamp designed by Tom Dixon and has recently been exhibited at the Milan Design Week. This lamp is quite large with a 65cm or 25 inches wide shade made from a geometrical copper anodized aluminum sphere using a process called digital photo-acid etching. In the middle of the sphere is a bright LED bulb that provides the light source.

Harley-Davidson lost in Japan's tsunami washes up in Canada

With the longest coastline in the world, Canada is bound to get all sorts of weird things washing up on its shores from every which direction. But a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. That's what one Peter Mark found while riding his ATV on a secluded island off the Pacific coast of British Columbia. It's origin. Japan.

The bike – enclosed along with other random items in what appears to be the compartment off a moving truck – appears to have traveled some 3,000 miles across the North Pacific from Japan's Miyagi Prefecture to the Canadian province of British Columbia.

BOWDEN + SHEFFIELD Minimalist iPad Cases are an iPad lover's delight

. We've already featured numerous iPad cases before, but as the days progress, we find ourselves digging for more. We recently came across a one-of-a-kind iPad case developed a student-run design company called Fine Grain. They just launched a new product on Kickstarter called the BOWDEN + SHEFFIELD Minimalist iPad Cases.

So, what is so special about this iPad case? The Bowden and the Sheffield, as it is also called, was built upon the idea of creating an iPad case that is sturdy enough to take a beating, yet sleek enough for any given setting.

Ninjump HD iPad App Review

Ninjump HD iPad App Review

Sometimes, the game with the simplest instructions give the best experience. Take it from Ninjump HD, which was developed by Backflip Studios. Your protagonist ninja does nothing but climb a pair of walls as high as he can, with only a tap of your finger (most preferably the thumb) to make him switch from one wall to the other. But it's not that easy, as he needs to avoid obstacles and enemies ranging from blue birds, quick squirrels, and enemy ninjas. You can defeat the animals and the weapons thrown by ninjas (like stars and bombs) by slashing them as you jump–which he does anyway.

LG is reportedly taking a step back from Windows Phone, will focus on Android instead

When Windows Phone is mentioned, brands such as Nokia, HTC and maybe even Samsung come to mind, but what about LG. Well you can't be blamed for not including LG, after all the company's efforts with the LG Quantum weren't exactly stellar nor widely publicized to begin with. It looks like if you were hoping for more variety in terms of brands for Windows Phone devices, you can now cross off LG from your list. According to a report in the Korea Herald, LG has announced that the company has no immediate plans to introduce a new Windows Phone device into the market and will instead be focusing on Android smartphones in the future.

Huawei looking into 3D gestures for smartphone control

While Huawei has been making a name for themselves as manufacturers of affordable handsets, they have started to make their way into higher-end devices with the Ascend D Quad which was announced earlier this year at MWC. While high-end hardware specs are no doubt welcome by end-users, it seems that Huawei is looking to introduce some interesting features as well. In an interview with Computerworld, Huawei's North American research chief, John Reese, revealed that the company is looking into 3D gestures for use with their smartphones.

The eponymous service offers 5GB free space as standard, while owners of LG's Smart TVs or smartphones will get 50GB free for six months. It'll push content between your devices, appropriately compressed for the medium, so high definition images on your TV will be slimmed down to save your phone's data cap.

Sadly we can't all be spacemen. Commercial travel beyond the atmosphere is getting closer but still priced way, way, way beyond the budgetary constraints of mere human beings. The closest many of us will get to outer space is photography and, thanks to ever-cheaper and ever-more-durable cameras, getting those pictures is easier than ever. Engadget recently visited Project Aether on location in Fairbanks Alaska, a group working to study what happens in the upper atmosphere and, along the way, inspire students around the world.

Patterned by Nature: it's big, blocky and earth-approved (video)

Quick quiz: which consumes more power, an "energy-efficient" 55-inch LED TV, or the 90-foot "Patterned by Nature" video installation at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. It's actually a trick question, because the sculpture does eat less power - just 75 watts - but then it only has a fraction of the TV's pixels. Each of its 3600 "dots" is in fact a 6-inch glass pane which can vary its transparency, a decidedly more lo-fi approach than similar tech we've seen before, but no less arresting as a result.

Scientists found no convincing proof that radio waves from mobile phones cause brain tumors or any other type of cancer. They did caution that it was “important” to watch for signs of rising cancer cases, however, because they had too little information to assess the risk beyond 15 years of mobile usage.

Valve's Steam Software Arriving on Linux Soon

There have been rumors stretching from as far back as 2010 that the game developer Valve was going to bring its Steam distribution software to the Linux platform. Now however after the development that was denied a long time back, Valve is apparently working on porting it to Linux over the next few months. Steam has been available on PC since it was unveiled in March 2002 at the Game Developers Conference. Since then, the gaming platform found its way to Mac systems globally in May 2010 which provided an avenue for what seemed to be a neglected gaming scene that Macs were facing at the time.

Users on contract now total 9.5 million, with 16 percent of them making the move across to a smartphone.
