Bisimoto Hyundai Elantra GT Concept makes monster power for a family hatch

When Bisimoto took on the challenge of tuning the rather pedestrian Hyundai Elantra GT into a proper performance vehicle for SEMA, it took no half-measures. Rather than simply dropping in a turbocharger and bumping up output by 50 horsepower or so, the tuning house completely revamped the engine, added forced induction and fed the thing a bottle full of methanol.

Hurricane Sandy destroys 16 Fisker Karmas at port with water and fire

Hurricane Sandy destroys 16 Fisker Karmas at port with water and fire

Even before Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the US, there was no doubt the storm would wreak havoc for automakers (especially luxury brands) in the Northeast, but it looks like Fisker may have taken the biggest, most spectacular hit. According to Jalopnik, 16 Fisker Karma models waiting to be shipped off to dealers at Port Newark were flooded during the storm surge, and while it isn't clear how it happened, some of the cars ended up catching on fire. This isn't the first (or second) time a Fisker Karma has caught fire, but it is a different scenario that led to the fires.

Better Lumia cameras are in the pipeline

Better Lumia cameras are in the pipeline

Nokia is pretty proud of the work that they have done so far when it comes to the kind of cameras in their Windows Phone-powered range of Lumia handsets, and it seems that the future will bring more of the same. It does look as though Nokia is going to concentrate fully on the imaging aspect of their smartphones as a differentiating factor should the consumer wonder just which mobile operating system they should jive with. There is also the possibility of utilizing the 41-megapixel camera technology that is found in Nokia's 808 PureView in a future Windows Phone.

Now that Microsoft's officially flooded the world with good tidings of Windows Phone 8, it's the turn of OEMs and carriers to get the word out about their own Microsoft-flavored smartphones. We finally got a chance to play with Nokia's previously leaked and recently announced Lumia 822 for Verizon, a mid-range handset similar to the Lumia 820 on AT&T and the Lumia 810 for T-Mobile that will cost $99 with a two-year contract. Availability is slated for sometime in November - it's been a long time since we've seen a Nokia device on Verizon (sorry, but those Pantech-built models don't count), so this is rather exciting news.

Mobilicity upgrade to 21Mbps HSPA+ goes live with throttled service to match

Sometimes the leaks are uncannily accurate. As we'd seen just days ago, Mobilicity has flicked on its 21Mbps HSPA+ network, giving customers of the alternative Canadian carrier up to three times the speed of before if they're using new $80 Huawei E366 modem or a compatible smartphone. Unfortunately, the other part of the rumor is also true: there's now a curb on that unlimited data. Cross the (admittedly high) 6GB mark and those speeds may be throttled without springing for the 20GB that comes with either a $20 Premium Data Add-On for phones or a data-only $50 Premium Mobile Data Internet Plan.

This Good Samaritan Is Charging Phones on the Streets of Manhattan

Gadgets aren't everything: I learned that last night as I watched while hurricane Sandy batter NYC. The newest tablet computer seems unimportant when so many people are in significant danger. But the storm's over now, and it's back to technology. While some people were hurt, a lot of people got out OK and things are slowly going back to normal. However, most of Lower Manhattan is still without power, and that means some people are getting desperate for a gadget charge. I present to you a unidentified New Yorker, generously offering his power strip to other desperate New Yorkers.

Kia mulling Forte production in US?

Kia mulling Forte production in US?

Since we already know what the 2014 Kia Forte will look like courtesy of the Kia K3 and Cerato, the big news at the car's official debut at the LA Auto Show could end up being where the car is built. Reuters is reporting that Kia is considering building the all-new Forte in the US, and while it didn't say which plant, we'd venture to guess the redesigned compact will be built alongside its sister car, the Hyundai Elantra, in Montgomery, Alabama. This report is even more credible following an article in Bloomberg that indicates that labor disputes and union strikes in South Korea affected Kia's third-quarter profits and stock prices.

You might remember Google's unveiling this spring of the Street View Trekker, a seeming cross between a backpack and Van de Graaff generator that lets the mapping team produce 360-degree imagery where even trikes dare not tread. The portable camera ball is just going on its first trip, and Google has chosen the most natural destination for a novice tourist - the Grand Canyon, of course. Staffers with Trekkers are currently walking trails along the South Rim of the canyon to provide both eye-level points of reference for wayward hikers as well as some breathtaking, controllable panoramas for those who can't (or won't) make it to Arizona.

FL man injured after attempting to show skills to football recruiters by jumping moving car

There are the right ways to get noticed by football scouts and there are the wrong ways. Performing life-threatening car stunts to show your skills are definitely in the latter category, but Bladimir Barreto, 19, of Palm Bay, Florida, decided that videotaping himself jumping over a moving car was an appropriate way to display his vertical jump to college recruiters. Instead of landing a spot on a college football team, though, Barreto landed himself in the hospital with serious injuries.

Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Note 2 now available for pre-order

Planning on picking up the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 but don't think that T-Mobile is the carrier for you. Well Verizon has rather quietly put up the pre-order page for their Galaxy Note 2. It is priced cheaper than T-Mobile's offering at $299.99 along with a new two-year contract, although you might have to put up with Verizon branding the home button with their logo. Not a big deal but for those who might want to resell their handset or prefer a sleeker look, this could be something of an eyesore.

Apple apologizes without apologizing

Apple apologizes without apologizing

You know that there has been a huge furore surrounding the Apple and Samsung court cases, where different courts around the world have come up with different rulings and verdicts even though more or less, the similar kinds of arguments were used by both sides. It was not too long ago that a UK court ruled that Samsung did not copy or infringe upon Apple's patent, “registered design No. 0000181607-0001,” and Apple has issued a statement concerning the situation. Basically, while they acknowledge Samsung's "innocence" by the UK court, they also reminded that other European legal jurisdictions beg to differ.

Hummingbird is a 'pre-Arduino' for kids (video)

It's an Arduino - you know, for kids. Or, as BirdBrain Technologies' chief robot design Tom Lauwers put it, a "pre-Arduino." It's never too early to get kids into robot building - or so goes the thought process behind this nectar-loving kit. At its center is a custom controller that can be used to manipulate a slew of different sensors, motors and lights, a number of which are included in the box. Getting started is extremely simple - don't believe us. Check the video after the break, in which Lauwers connects two wires to get the whole process underway. The kit's also reasonably priced at $199 a piece.

Digital Storm Bolt stuffs full-power graphics into a mini gaming desktop, stretches laws of physics

Attempts to create truly small gaming desktops usually involve at least some kind of performance hit. Even HP's category-bending Firebird, one of the few stand-out examples, had to use toned-down graphics to succeed in a tiny enclosure. Digital Storm might have broken the trend towards sacrifice with its new Bolt desktop: although it's just 3.6 inches wide and 14 inches tall, the Bolt can cram in as much as a GeForce GTX 680 and will even let gamers upgrade the graphics like they would in a full-size PC.
